Color usage

These color usage guidelines support consistency across the Lab’s digital products. Adhering to these guidelines allows us to create recognizable, accessible experiences for our users.

Contrast ratios

Mesa follows WCAG 2.0 AA guidelines for color contrast ratios. This requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, and a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 for graphics and user interface components (such as form input borders).

Large text is defined as 14 point (typically 18.66px) and bold or larger, or 18 point (typically 24px) or larger.

If you’re unsure whether your color choices pass WCAG AA standards, you can check your contrast ratio with tools like the WebAim Contrast Checker or Accessible Colors, or reach out to the UI/UX team at uiux-design@lanl.gov.

Our primary blues, greens, and greys can be used widely across a broad range of applications. These should form the main foundation of any color palette at the Lab.

In general, adhere to the 60/30/10 rule. This means that 60% of your design area should use the dominant color, 30% should use the secondary color, and 10% should use an accent color. Dominant and secondary colors should be relatively neutral, while the accent color should be used to draw attention to the most important elements of the design.
